Midterm 10 - My House

Whew! This one took a while. But it was fun once I got the hang of using the tools (I hate having to click on a tool every time!) and could get the objects in the correct order on the drawing (bringing them to the front or putting them to the back). Needless to say free drawing is not easy, especially trying to draw things like people or pets. I opted for the Koi pond out front with Goldie doing a little jump. The textures were limiting but I think I did well with some standard things like the bricks on the house and chimney and the wool on Junior's sweater and the very uniform lawn. My wife does good work on the grass doesn't she? LOL

Midterm 9 - Course Diagram

Well, here is my course diagram. I played around with colors for the outlines and fill colors of the different shapes and put in a bit of text. I have actually done a fair amount of this for work for presentations and spreadsheets, but I never thought of going to this extent. i guess I am just expanding my boundaries!

Midterm 8 - Headshot

In this picture from a ballgame this summer I had my usual weekend look going on - calm, relaxed, and needing some sleep, a shave, and a hot steam iron. Comment if you want, but when I get time off and can go somewhere to relax even using a razor seems unnecessary! LOL

So a little smudging (OK a lot of smudging) and a little blurring and it looks like I got my shirt pressed at the park with a shave and some cucumbers for the bags under my eyes. A miracle!

Midterm 7 - Who's Behind Those Stylish Sunglasses?

At times I couldn't tell who made less sense when they spoke.... George W. Bush or Ozzy Ozbourne! Thus my inspiration for this in-class trial run.

But this doesn't quite fit the assignment. Quite frankly I had to repeat the assignment because I saved my whimsical work as a flattened JPEG. The following pic follows the assignment to the letter and is saved as a non-flattened PNG file.

Midterm 6 - Layers and Animation

These exercises were a bit tougher! Tux was a bit easier to get together. Putting the layers together wasn't too tough, especially since we went over some examples in class. The more I manipulated the better I got at adding layers and anchoring.













The rotating animation was a bit tougher, especially since the GIMP I downloaded was 2.6 and finding the right selections in the drop-down menus took a bit of online GIMP tutorial reading. I think I goofed with one of the layers because the text blinks out mid-rotation.

Midterm 5 - Monster!!

LOL For over six years I had to settle for a slow dial-up connection at my house because Verizon didn't want to upgrade the local service. In fact, they sold the entire phone network to another company to avoid the expense of the upgrade. So I finally broke down and got a cable high speed line for phone and internet.....and now I need to view this using a dial-up connection! I will have to look at this at work while I have a million things working on my computer at the same time. I have no problem slowing down my connections there. One pdf of a military spec will do the trick.

Update - All I needed to do is try to open one of the midterm examples and I got slow! Got to see the files upload.

Midterm 3 - Saving in Different Web Formats

For this exercise we started by converting a tiff file into a gif file. Pretty straightforward.

....and now a jpeg..............

......and finally a png file.

Not much difference to my naked eye, but the file sizes are significantly different. Jpeg's are the smallest file size by far.

Speaking of naked, forgot to put my name on the pics!

Midterm 2 - Adding a Caption

Adding a caption to a picture was pretty easy. After designating the area where I wanted to place the text with the Select tool I was able to color the area, designate a text style, color, and size, and play with the size of the text box. I have done similar manipulations in Excel spreadsheets in cells and text boxes.

Oh, by the way, for some reason I was channeling Sylvester and Tweetie when we were doing this exercise so I deviated from the directions and the indicated phrase I should have put in regarding Samus. Call it artistic license!

Midterm 1 - Redeye Exercise

For my first exercise using GimpShop we had to remove the redeye from a picture. So I chose a picture of a Huskie. Not only would I need to remove the redeye but I would need to modify the color of both eyes. So by zooming in on each eye I was able to access the individual pixels and, using the dropper tool (eyedropper in this case!) I was able to restore the white of each eye and tint the iris of the left eye to a pale shade of blue. The only real problem I encountered was in trying to make the pupils black and round. Because I focused in on each eye separately the pupils are out of symmetry and appear googly eyed!
